Alcohol and bipolar disorder

I finally got diagnosed bipolar disorder and got medicated. It was obvious to the medical team that I had been self medicating for years. Imidiatly after medication, I quit drinking. No WD, no cravings what so ever. The relief I feel now is huge!
Alcohol abuse is an ordinary habit amongst people with a BP diagnose, as well as for many other psych diagnosis. I hope ppl on this forum gets a proper asessment regarding underlying psych disorders, in order to be properly treated for what could be the core of the alcoholism…

I too was diagnosed with bipolar and got medication for it, but still drank. Now that I'm sober, my meds work as they should.

That's fantastic news for you Skybert, thanks for sharing. I think just about all of us have some underlying condition we attempted to solve with alcohol - for me it was anxiety, but there are many.
