Ego vs Self Esteem
My understanding is that self-esteem comes from doing esteemable things, like good deeds, acts of service, behaving in accordance with your own moral code, and so forth. Self-esteem is selflessness with healthy boundaries.
I see "ego" as it's generally referred (as in outside of psychology) as being full of yourself, thinking you're better than others, being easily offended if people don't agree with you or have differing views (as opposed to being able to hear a contrary view and not taking it personally), thinking everything revolves around you, centering yourself in everything, and so forth. Ego is selfish self-focus that says what I want is more important than what anyone else wants, and I want what I want even if it hurts others, and I'm not interested in finding a middle way. It's my way or the highway!
