5 years today.

5 years off the booze...

Never thought I'd make it a month given my past. Kevin Smith used to say after his widow maker that everyday he clocks after that is just "borrowed time". Same. I did a tremendous amount of damage to myself. I don't know why God spared my life. I just know he wasn't done with me. I don't think I'm anything but lucky. Through Grace or chance (I chose to believe the first) I've been able to rebuild. I love my life now.

I've lost some people this year from alcoholism. Inside the walls of recovery it happens a lot. This illness, disease, whatever you wanna call it is insidious. It will convince you that you're fine. That you're not nearly as sick as they think, and that alone, makes it so incredibly deadly. An sad.

Early sobriety sucked. BAD. It was messy and confusing and a complete nightmare. But it was worth it.
Every crappy day, sleepless night, every dam thing that I had to go through in sobriety to get to this place was worth it. Any day you live sober, even if it's your last, is a victory over this illness.

Normal people will never understand the grip. I don't expect them to. But believe me when I say to anyone out there struggling, that it gets easier. If you put 1/10 of the work you did into messing things up as you do into recovery, you will succeed.

Medical statistics say about 1 in 13 will ever make it to long term recovery.

F U statistics.
Be your own aberration.

Nice. It's okay to give yourself some credit for turning your life in an entirely different direction and experiencing joy while you're at it.
