Caffeine. cup of tea or coffee making you want to drink alcohol
I dunno. Pretty much anything made me think of drinking in the end, cos I did everything with a drink.
I'm sorry you're planning a night in the pub.
I hope the weekend warrior thing works for you, but...I don't think it will man
Guys(and gals) who can drink only on a weekend and drink like a gentleman/person, and be satisfied with that, don't tend to seek out sites like ours.

keeping in mind that a big majority of people start out as so called normal drinkers or weekend drinkers, and devleope to alcoholics as their intanke increases and control reduces, it is still relevent.
Few go straight from zero to alcoholic. Even those kids who are tanning the drink at stupid ages tend to grow out of it and become normal drinkers as they hit their 20s. It's the ones who don't slow down at that age, or the ones that appear normal but gradually incrase it over time and hit a wall in their 30s.
Anyway, coffee high only lasts a short time and some pubs are closed where I am. No drinking in a pub for a while yet for me. Liver will be happy.
Glassman,
Alcoholism is not a disease that is developed from increasing ones alcohol consumption over time. It is a disease that is with you from the start. If you believe that alcoholism is a disease? The stages of alcoholism are a bit like climbing a ladder. It could be a long while before a person climbs to the top of that ladder, but the "allergy" is always there.
Some individuals, who are younger and have the allergy, can see where their drinking is leading them and they are able to put down the boxing gloves and walk out of the ring. Most "allergic" individuals need to repeat their behavior and continually beat their head against the wall before they even begin to start telling the truth to themselves.
You can keep bargaining with yourself and please know we will be here for you through all of that. I think you inherently know what your truth is. You would not be on a recovery site otherwise.

I'd have to say that in some people it still is something that they develope over time.
An alcoholic is made, they are not born. There is nothing different to their make up that made them become an alcoholic the moment their first drink touched their lips. It developes over time. that time can be short or it can be a long battle into old middle age where intake increases.
stay safe
Thank you.

If you took your first drink and didn't think it was super fun and amazing and had no desire to have another one when that one was gone, how did you come to think you might need to cut back?
I do think there is biology and circumstance at play, but it has been proven that alcoholics have a genetic "glitch" that causes them to metabolize alcohol in a different way than non-alcoholics.
If you can drink in a controlled manner and enjoy it without consequences, why did you join this forum?

That doesn't mean everyone like this becomes alcoholic. Self-control, or not using any (because we all have it), is an enormous factor as well.
Why you would tempt yourself by going to a spot that was built for the purpose of drinking is - well, I'll just say that you've probably made smarter decisions in your lifetime.

You said the coffee high only lasts a short time and that is what grabbed my attention. That sounds like addict thinking/behaviour. Getting a high from the caffeine. I love tea and drink caffeinated tea but I dont get a high from it. I rarely drink coffee but when I do I feel that kind of buzz. That high. I switched to decaffeinated now because the alcoholic/addict in me was attracted to that and that freaked me out.
Honestly, in my experience, I did not find myself in an AA meeting and on Sober Recovery because I had a bad hangover. I found them because I couldn't stop drinking despite all the bad consequences I had from drinking. When I put alcohol in my body I set off a phenomenon of craving so powerful I am unable to stop and have no idea where that drink will take me. But when I wanted to quit I could not stay stopped. Alcoholism IS progressive. I was in and out of AA and on many different forums for a few years before I finally surrended 2 years and 6 months ago. My last "drink" nearly killed me. Alcoholism will do that. My alcoholism wants me dead but will settle for me drunk. If you are an alcoholic you will never beat it. It WILL take you down. But you can get off of the elevator at any time.
I could not imagine a life without alcohol. I lived to drink. I can now say from my own experience that life is SO much better . Not all days are easy and and full of Rose's. But even my worst day sober is better than my best day drunk. There is so much out there ti explore/enjoy. I lived in pubs. That's where I wanted to spend all of my time. Today, I have zero desire to go into one. They hold nothing for me.
Abstinance is the ONLY way if you are alcoholic.
🙏♥️🙏♥️

Nature or nurture. Chicken or egg. None of those really mattered so much as acknowledging the simple fact that I am an alcoholic. How I became an alcoholic was not the priority at that point. The number one priority was working on how not to drink. During the process of learning how not to drink, light was shed on the questions of nature/nurture, chicken/egg, etc.
I still don't spend a lot of time on figuring out those questions. I focus more on growth. While I think those questions can provide some valuable insight, they also can potentially serve more as salve for my ego, like get out jail free card, which is not conducive to my recovery. That may not be true for everyone, but I am starting to know this alcoholic, and for me it is a possibility and a danger. I don't need any extra help in not accepting responsibility.
On my truck, my windshield is much bigger than my rear view mirror, and it is that way for a good reason.
glassman, it doesn't matter whether we agree that alcoholics are made, born, developed, not real, ...
what matters is what happens to you with your drinking.
you make your decisions around it, and then get to see if your actions are in line with those decisions. if and when you decide to just have two, or only on friday, and that doesn't consistently work out the way you planned it and you find yourself going beyond your set limits, or you find yourself really discontented and pre-occupied with drinking/not drinking, then you will be able to see you have a different problem on your hands.
if you are willing to see.
i remember well my futile attempts at control, and my long unwillingness to see it for what it was.

I never grew out of it so that argument is moot for me.
Just for arguments sake, how old are you?
I'm glad the pubs are closed.

I've never really heard of this "an alcoholic is made" kind of stuff.
Interesting views for sure.
