Is this a "slip" or relapse?
Is this a "slip" or relapse?
This might sound crazy - and I don't want to go into a long crazy soliloquy about how/why this has happened, so to simplify, did doing these two things wipe out my 18 months of sobriety? Am I now back to day 1 of my sobriety after doing these two things?:
1. Using ZZZQuil (it has 10% alcohol in it). I didn't abuse it, just took a sip or two to help me sleep a few nights in the last few weeks
2. Using Vodka for mouthwash
Am I still sober for 18+ months now after doing those two things, or did my sobriety get wiped out?

Why did I use vodka for mouthwash?
I am having debilitating pain in my teeth/jaw and It is beyond excrusiating. I went to the dentist last week, went to the ER to get a scan yesterday, and just saw a ENT. The OTC painkillers aren't doing a damn thing to help alleviate the pain in my jaw/teeth/head. It's f------ unbearable.
Why is there vodka in my house? My friend dropped that bottle off a few months ago and I just left it. Probably should have poured it down the drain, but I am sitting right next to it right now. I have been washing my mouth out with it - rotating that, Orajel, saltwater, hydrogen peroxide - anything I can to try to fight the pain which has got me on the verge of suicide it is so bad.

Vodka for mouthwash? Seriously? You had to go there rather than wait to go buy mouthwash the next day?
Color me crazy, but that's C R A Z Y. Yes, for that one I'd say that not only did you relapse, you're doing foolish and unnecessary things that are tempting your AV. Like your AV needs to be tempted....
I use ZZZQuil all the time to help me sleep and I don't care what anyone says about the alcohol content in that. I don't drink it to get drunk and that's all there is to it. If I want to drink alcohol - I'll go buy some. But I've never heard of anyone using vodka as mouthwash - especially someone wanting to maintain their sobriety. You sure you didn't swallow any?

Go to the emergency room.
Yeah, whatever is going on with your pain needs medical care today.
Oil of clove is good for tooth pain, but it sounds like you're way past that home-remedy.
Slip or relapse? Call it what you want.
What did your regular dentist think it was? Did he take X-Rays? I can't believe the ER would discharge you without a diagnosis?
You could call an endodontist, they have highly advanced imaging machines and can pinpoint your issue if it's dental related - but I would think the ER would have caught that on a CT scan.

No I didn't swallow any. The pain is beyond bad - it's "TMJ" if anyone here has experienced it it's driving me nuts I went to the ER yesterday the pain was so bad. I can't eat or swallow anything without pain.
A bottle of vodka would almost certainly take this horrific pain I have away. But no, I have not drank any I just swished it around in the mouth numerous times yesterday and today. I didn't not swallow any.

The reason I am asking you all is that...if it is a true slip or relapse and my 18 months of sobriety is gone, I might as well get drunk as hell.
It's your call what you choose to call this. No one else has that power, Amnesiac. People have "opinions" and that's all.
Are you sure you're not just looking for a way to drink? You have 19 months sober? You want to throw that away?
No one can tell you if this is a relapse or not. That's for you and only you to decide.
I have had TMJ in the past and I can't imagine any kind of mouthwash helping with that. Try massaging your jaw line from your chin, towards your ear. Use gentle pressure on the spots that hurt to help increase blood flow. Practise relaxing your jaw as much as you can.
Could it be that you're looking for an excuse to drink?

How did you get that from what I said?

Honestly yes, I probably am looking for an excuse to drink.

Honesty is a good start. Especially when it comes to you being honest with yourself, which is what (I'm guessing) prompted you write here in the first place. Try as you might - you still couldn't fool yourself.
Any pain that is worth you contemplating using alcohol to assuage it, is pain that's worth a visit to the ER. This isn't rocket science. It's pretty obvious to me that you want to drink and you're using the pain as your excuse to fool around with alcohol.
You don't need an excuse to drink.

Potato potaahto, tomato tomaahto, just don't call the whole sobriety thing off. Start again, building that new sober version of you day by day but wiser this time. Learning how to live sober is a skill that often takes a while to get the knack of, don't be discouraged. That's just the nature of learning any demanding tricky life skill. It's more like an art than a science but maybe more like a craft than an art.
