What do you think about having an opposite sex sponsor. I'm a gay man looking for a sponsor, and I think I might be more comfortable working through the steps with a woman.

I've seen it happen with members of my former home group, who were in the same situation as you. I believe it worked out well for them.

I don't want to speak for all of AA, but I imagine that as long as sponsor and sponsee are comfortable with the arrangement, that's what matters the most.

pick the person who "has what you want" in the recovered sense of that phrase, and who you are not attracted to.

In one of my first meetings we had a speaker that was a lesbian that had a straight man for a sponsor. I forget how much time she had but I think it was pretty long term like 10 years give or take. So yes, it can be done.

freedomfries, one more suggestion: check out why you would be more uncomfortable with a guy. see what that’s about. there is always a possibility that your reason(s) include running from something, or fear of something that you might benefit from facing.
