Antabuse shortage
I was taking antabuse (generic) for quite awhile and found it to be the best thing to keep me sober. I got to the point that I didn't have to take it every day, just enough to keep it in my system.I had no side effects. When I went to renew my prescription I was told that there is a worldwide shortage and my pharmacist cannot get it.This was a few months ago and I'm really struggling without it.Does anyone know any updates about when and if it will be available again?
Re: Antabuse shortage
Im not sure what insurance you have but have you tried other pharmacies? I also take Antabuse. I fill it at rite aid and have had to call around. So far I have only had to drive about 30 min out of the way. Hope you can find it...
Re: Antabuse shortage
Google tells me that there were 4 manufacturers, two of them discontinued making it, one (TEVA) says it's testing a new formulation and it's talking longer than they anticipated. The other manufacturer (Aldova, maybe?) reports shipping delays.
Lilys on the right track going through a huge pharmacy to find it.

I took antabuse for the first three months of my recovery as a part of going to any lengths. At that point my personality had changed sufficiently to overcome alcoholism and the antabuse became redundant. I dont think the threat of being punished for drinking by way of an antabuse reaction would have kept me sober long term. My previous experience was that it bought me a few days from when I stopped taking it to when I drank, which in theory created an opportunity for me to change my mind. However, my obsession was not to be put off so easily. It went in this order. Obsession comes back, stop taking antabuse, wait a few days then..... When the obsession is back it never enters my head to do the sensible thing.
