I'm currently 31 and I have never been a normal drinker. Ever. However, it's only been a problem for the last 7 years or so. Even in college I didnt drink all the time ... but then one day I just wanted to blackout all the time. Now I cant stop binging.

I would have to answer your question with another question...which time?

I started drinking regularly when I was 18 and quit when I was 29, so 11 years.

Then I started drinking again when I was 35 and quit when I was 36, so 1 year.

Then I started drinking again when I was 44 and quit when I was 52, so 8 years.

So I drank alcoholically for 20 years, just not all at once. In one week I will celebrate 7 years sober. Add my other two stretches of sobriety of 6 & 7 years and that also adds up to 20 years, just not all at once.

40 years of daily drinking. The funny thing is that although it was messing up work and relationships I didn't realise it was a problem until quite recently.
