How to not envying those 'lucky normal drinkers'; some thoughts
People who aren't alcoholics don't get the same thing from drinking we do. Before I was an alcoholic getting drunk meant getting sick. They can't function with that much alcohol in their system. Drunkenness is not a good feeling unless your body has adapted to it. So really your not wishing for what you think you are. If you just stay clear long enough and put in the work to readjust your perspective you'll be just as good as any normal person. "When it comes to alcohol, it's just not worth it."
These are good questions and observations, Vulcan.
I was initially extremely jealous of people who could drink without consequences.
I focused on them and felt rather self-pitying about my own dire circumstances.
I eventually came to a level of acceptance as to my own disease and the absolute necessity of my abstinence.
I don’t envy anyone now.
I’m filled with gratitude that I have been granted the gift of sobriety and emotional (and mental health) recovery.
My wife drinks a beer or a glass of wine perhaps once a year, but never in my presence, even though it would not bother me.
Although I am undoubtedly an alcoholic, I have been blessed with great health and many other blessings.
I focus on what I have and not on things I cannot safely do.
