How much money did you waste on booze in a year?

I was laying in bed last night and thinking of the past year and how much I was drinking. When I was drinking, I didn’t care what I was spending.

When I dug down per week on what I was drinking and multiplied it by 52, it came out at ~$10,500 US.

You. Have. Got. To. Be. Kidding. Me.

Just one more reason I’m not going back to that life.

Too much to count. And yes, a very tangible benefit to quitting

For me, it’s more an issue of lost income. I sure wasn’t productive.

^^^^This 100%

I won't give exact figures, but I was consuming half my rent in liquor. Plus as mentioned above, my ambition flew out the window.

Very true. Lost income and ambition. To have even been considered for a promotion just wasn’t a reality anymore.

If I'd have a dime for every dollar I spent on alcohol, just in the past ten years, I could still afford some nice toys!

Lol. I always wondered how some of my family/friends could afford hot tubs, 4 wheelers, etc.... oh yeah, you don’t drink yourself to sleep

In 2018 I spent about £25,000 - that was all my spending that wasn’t on housing costs. There’s cigarettes and a bit of coke in there, along with expenses that were occasional extras - like food. Vast majority was booze. Sickening to think of

Yea lost income was probably the worst.... And also every time I went to buy alcohol at the grocery which was almost every day, I would rotate different stores and I'd buy a bunch of other food items as well that I didn't need so no one would be 'on to my drinking problem'. I became paranoid

So I’m not the only one to do that eh?

I rotated as well....until I realized the liquor stores clerk honestly didn't care. I'd go in right after work every day, buy the same plastic fifth of vodka. If the weekend or a day off was coming up, it'll be a handle or more.

How pathetic I was. Ten days of not drinking could buy be a nice new pair of running shoes (running shoes aren't cheap!). The things I could have had, the vacations I could have taken...

Crazy, eh! Like you I didn't care how much I was spending on alcohol. It was my priority.
I am so glad that life is behind me now.

Kind of the point of this thread. I know there are a lot of people reading and not posting thinking about quitting. Just wanted to bring to light how much more money we would all have.

Yeah, its funny. I'd go to ring out and the clerk would always ask if that was everything and I'd reply, "I'll be back tomorrow!" Sadly, I wasn't joking.

Another stunt I pulled was getting a gallon of milk at the grocery store in the same shopping center as the liquor store, using the self checkout and get $20 cash back on my debit card. That way a liquor store charge never showed up on a bank statement. I thought I was a genius. I'd also always get the plastic bottles so I could burn them and they wouldn't rattle like glass when stuffed in a backpack after they were empty. Again, I could have won some awards for how sneaky I was (so I thought...).

I was buying top shelf stuff because I thought I wouldn’t get hungover. Maybe that’s true if you drink in moderation? But the amount I was drinking, a hangover was inevitable.

Too much, far too much. But it cost me a lot more than mere monetary damage in the finish up.

It only cost me $150 a month to drive myself to near suicide.
*Pints of cheap whiskey drank on the couch.
