I think one of the most important responsibilities of an AA group is make the newcomer feel welcome. I sure felt welcomed to my first meeting, went along way with me. Keep searching for a friendly group.

In general I have found AA welcoming. Some groups seem like a social club where old time members pat themselves on the back which is not to my taste. I prefer groups with a mixed membership of newcomers and long timers.
But in general I have had and continue to have a positive experience with AA.
