Well, I am a defective unit, but I know that's not what you mean. A measure of alcohol I believe, but I don't know how much. As an alcoholic it doesn't matter much to me as quantity isn't a significant symptom. Loss of control and choice are the defining symptoms.

However, if your were a hard drinker, continuing to drink, then harmful physical effects of alcohol consumption might be something you would want to take into account. For example, alcohol is in the same class of carcinogen as cigarettes, so cancer risks are greatly increased if you drink a lot. I think there might have been some recently released research indicating that there is no safe level.

In Australia a unit is 10 grams of alcohol.
In the UK its 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol.

The USA seems to still use standard drinks as a measure.

It would be nice to have a standardised universal measure but that's probably some years off yet.

Here;s a British animation that maybe helpful

naturally the video is geared to the general public - not to folks like us.
The safest measure for us is zero units

I've wondered that myself.
Here's one I never knew: a "handle." I didn't know what a handle was until after I got sober.

Handle is one of those words that can throw the younger generation for a loop. Another one is Tavern. Or Station Wagon. Or Regular GAS(Leaded Gas) or Barn Burner. Good topic you can have a lot of fun with it.

A question that if you're anything like me, if you have to ask, you can't afford it. I spent alot of years researching the definitions and terms of alcoholism and taking quizzes, trying to answer truthfully but never wanting to see the answer. Eventually, when I had to go to DUI school and take their test, I saw in plain government black and white what I couldn't deny any longer. I hope if you're struggling, you'll get help before you get to that kind of bottom. Still took me 4 years after that though. Never give up <3
