Pneumonia
Pneumonia
This bout of illness might finally have done it for me.
I intend to remain sober.
I would have died if not for antibiotics and breathing treatments. Im so grateful for modern medicine. A hundred years ago, I would have been snuffed out. Done. I would have slowly drowned to death.
Everyday, for 2 weeks, I struggled for almost every single breath. Day and night as my oxygen dropped to frightening levels, I could only focus on breathing.
In and out. In and out. Deep breaths ending in wheezing and coughs I couldn’t clear. I would choke and panic my way though every minute of every hour. Gasping.
It was the most terrifying experience of my whole life.
And I got some history...
Life has never been more precious. Health has never been more precious.
A gift in strange wrapping indeed.
No more wasted moments. Literally and figuratively.
This is my new beginning on the second half of my life.

Glad you are better.
If it takes a near death experience to put the alcohol down, then that is what it takes.
Do whatever it takes to support that decision, because the epiphany that prompted it often fades with time.

Oh, AO my friend; I am so sorry for what you have been through - so very difficult and challenging.
Sending you so much love and prayers for a full recovery.
It is really wonderful to welcome you back to sobriety.

Yeah I had that a couple of times after a long binge, and got so sick I had to stop drinking in order to treat the illness with medication, and guess what? I had to go through a very bad alcohol withdrawal along with the pneumonia. Sweated like crazy the first few days. It was just horrible to say the least.
I had it sober and it whipped my rear!! I can relate to every word in your post!
Thank God you’re better, stay alert they say after you’ve had it once you’re more susceptible of catching it again.. also there’s a vaccine out, but it only prevents 1 strain.. there are millions of strains.. wash your hands often!

Welcome back Alpha, glad you were able to get he help you needed for your pneumonia and that you've recovered. Treat your addiction with the same desperate measures as you did for your sickness and you will go far.

It is wonderful how you find deep significance in every one of life’s circumstances, AO.
I’m glad this pneumonia crisis has inspired you not to be carried along by the status quo of drinking to get by.
You in your basic, unadorned, natural state will be much better able to register and appreciate this life to the full.

I'm plugging along. Back to work which I am so grateful for.
I'm grateful for everything.
Even bills and tuitions and traffic.
I have a bunch of ladies coming tonight for book club. I couldnt care less about booze. I have have what feels like the equivalent of a 14 day hangover and fortunately I never wanted to drink when I was hungover.
I will keep close and vigilant.
Thanks for the love guys.
