That old life
That old life
I took the dog out this evening and there they were. Some of my old clan in the courtyard celebrating Cinco de Mayo. Booze in hand, laughing joking around. One of them asked me, or you ever going to socialise with us anymore? I politely explained, I'm to busy. She said, are you kidding me, I posted this party a month ago. I told her enjoy yourself and I moved on with dog in tow.
I told her the truth. I don't have time to drink. Standing around and getting drunk talking about useless crap to neighbors is a total waste of time. There was about 15-20 people there. The old me would have been the last one to leave, drunk. The new me was happy I never went in the first place. I love how sobriety changes us. Our priorities change as we heal. It's a miracle. Truly a miracle.

A miracle, indeed.
It's a public holiday here in the UK on Monday so is long weekend. How nice not to have to get hammered and blackout and come too on Tuesday wondering what had happened.
Instead I will enjoy every moment of the weekend.

Good post Wayne. And it made me smile- after our monthly exercise adventure (sky yoga this time! My husband and I do a different "something" every month) we wanted Mexican. It barely registered that it was Cinco de Mayo til we were seated at one of our fave places and looked around at all the people drinking- we laughed because we thought it was perfectly ok to be two recovering alcoholics at a Mexican place, not drinking on this "holiday"!! Watching all of them day drinking was funny, not appealing.
Love this life we have in recovery.
