The following two thoughts have been and still are, ten years on, in my recovery from alcoholism...

Alcoholism is a two fold illness consisting of a mental obsession and a physical allergy, it is the only illness disease that will kill you whilst at the same time telling you, you haven't got it! The only respite from which is abstinence.

I would rather go through my life sober believing I'm an alcoholic. Than drunk, trying to convince myself I'm not.
