Lack of sleep

Still can't sleep for very long . Its been 5 weeks without a drink. Average sleep less than 5 hours! Smoking too much now had a heart attack last year so have to stop smoking as well . I think smoking is a crutch which i have to overcome before that kills me!

I have been doing "two sleeps" usually one for 4-5 hours at night then another one during the day of 2-3 hours as its still hard to fall asleep for me. From everything I have read and talking to people it will eventually pass, our brains are still getting used to not having the alcohol as a crutch.

Good to have you here and congrats on 5 weeks.

Have you considered seeing a Dr about the lack of sleep at all?

I am sorry that you are having trouble sleeping. Great idea to see a doctor.

I can say that one of the greatest benefits of sobriety to me is how well I sleep.

It took time, like all good things, but eventually I started to sleep like an angel and the first thing I noticed when I relapsed (long time ago now) was that my sleep IMMEDIATELY got bad agin.

So, I would see a doctor, but mainly hang in. It will be better!

Sleep issues are very common in sobriety. Actually, they are pretty common in general. I would say that if you are getting 5 hours of sleep in a row that's actually pretty good for where you are at in your sobriety.

Along with quitting drinking, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is also a big factor in getting good sleep. If you are smoking to the point of physical damage to your body, that is very likely contributing too. Quitting cigarettes has many advantages if you can do it.

Some simple things that can help anyone with getting sleep
1. Avoid eating before going to bed
2. Avoid stimulation ( TV, internet, phones..etc ) for at least an hour before bed
3. Get some exercise during the day - even just taking a walk can help
4. Avoid/reduce caffeine and sugar consumption.

Nicotine is a stimulant, so that may be a factor. It takes time to the body to recover from years of abuse. Great job on the 5 weeks! hang in there.

Sleeping was one of the biggest issues I've faced in early sobriety. It took 4 months but I'm now finallly sleeping well again most nights. I was taking advil PM for a while (actually did this when I was drinking too) but now find I can get a full 7-8 hours without it. Such a relief.. So I agree hang in there!
