50 y.o. this year. Day 1 today
Hi - I started drinking again on New Years Eve 2016
I drank a lot in 2017
This year I will turn 50 and I know it is a cliche to give up on Jan 1st but so be it - the time is right and I want to do it
I have 2 kids - 10 and 6 y.o. and I don't want them to grow up seeing me smashed all the time
I have a difficult but good wife - no support from her but only I can do this anyway
I know that Van Halen gave up at about this age and I'm using that as my inspiration
So here goes

Glad you posted - you can do it.
I quit drinking in 2016, the year I turned 40. I was almost 6 mo sober when I did and it was my first sober birthday in a long time.
Your kids will be infinitely better off if you quit now. Hopefully your wife will be a support too - ultimately, you are right that you have to quit for yourself (first- the rest can follow as a bonus, IME).
Take a look around here for info and good plans - maybe look at the Newcomers Daily Support Thread, Class of Jan 2018 for people also thinking about or quitting this month.
Take care. You can do it.

I'm 48 (so a very similar age to you) and I am on Day 30.
You'll feel amazing after a month and wonder why you hadn't done it before.
PS - I recommend this thread for people giving up this month. I was in the December thread and it helped me so much.

I think its perfect! No cliches necessary. I quit shortly after my 48th birthday. It had gotten very, very out of hand. It was not a date I chose, the date chose me.
Doesn't matter when you do it, the point is to do it.

Day 2 - in progress
Just checking in - Thanks for all the messages of support!
Got through Day 1 - insomnia of course and headaches - have been drinking solid for about 6 months - at least half a bottle of vodka a night - so expecting some withdrawal etc
Anyway - eating plenty, lots of salad and ready with sweets in the evening when the real cravings hit
So far - still ok

Brilliant.....the date chose me......exactly!!
Tones,
You sound exactly like me - same age, marital/ family situation and (most of) 2017 being repeated bouts of binge drinking. I wound up going to rehab early in the fall and haven't looked back. You got this man.
I've back in the gym daily and am getting my career completely on track again. Still working on the family aspect but it's all a process.
Glad you're here. Keep fighting---we have *lots* of life left!

It's always a great time to get and stay sober.
I was sober throughout my 50's and had a blast and, I think, did some real good in a variety of aspects of my life.
We're glad you're back with us.
I hope you have and follow a plan of sobriety which works for you.
I could not have done it on my own.

Start of day 4
Got through my first test which was a night alone in a hotel room. Up early today for a pre dawn flight to Frankfurt. Done this many times before and always hungover. Got so used to waking up feeling wasted that it is quite amazing to feel just tired.
Still feeling strong but got 2 weeks working alone in Frankfurt now. Going to stay clean.
Best to everyone else here going for it
