Where to Find a Long Term Rehab?

My mom is an alcoholic and I am trying to help her. I spent 3 hours on the phone, calling different places in Sonoma County, California and can’t find a low cost treatment center. All of the Rehab houses are asking for $5,000 and up.

The problem is that here in Sonoma County, there are no long term treatment centers which are covered by Medical insurance.

Does anyone know of Rehab houses or centers in there area that are low cost (under $400 a month)? Or maybe a work-to-live there sobriety house?

At this point, I am willing to travel anywhere to get my mom the help she needs.

I have only found one detox center covered by her insurance but it is only for 30 days. I feel she needs a long term program that is at least two months or more.

I had to leave intensive outpatient because of cost, and we are not poor. Rehab is ridiculously expensive.

Has your mother asked for you to find her a rehab?

It's often posted on this site that Salvation Army has free rehab. I don't know anything about it - just what I've read here.

Your mother will have to want to go. Does she want to go and get well? Does she want to quit, or is this just your hope?

Thank you Bim,
I know she wants to go because I spoke to her about it.

She is 62 years old, not working and lives with my sister in law. She is currently under a lot of depression and is often isolated because my sister in law works 16 hour days.

It’s not a good environment for her - she needs to socialize and have a support group.

What does her addiction specialist or counselor think? Trouble with inpatient rehab, that is well known, is that once you're out, you're usually back in your old environment, and you're at huge risk for immediate relapse. Particularly since you say she needs to socialize and join support groups, things she can and needs to do while living at home, not just at a rehab.

I think most bay area rehabs cater to either wealthy people, or people with good insurance that covers rehab. Even outpatient can be expensive, though there are more options there, and more likelihood that insurance will cover it. But two months of any sort of intensive treatment is likely to cost thousands, whether or not insurance covers it. I lucked out with my health insurance, and got intensive outpatient treatment for many months at $5/day, but if I had had to pay for it myself, it would have run over $5000.

Welcome happygo

There is a national database of treatment facilities here

https://findtreatment.samhsa.gov/

You can refine the results according to what you need - ie subsidised, low cost, free, older female etc.

I believe the Salvation Army does offer some long term rehab programmes but you would have to contact them to see if your mother would be a suitable applicant.

Check with states that have the rule 25, you may have luck there if she isn't working or on a fixed income... The state will pay for the program, depending on the results of the assessment. Minnesota has the rule, that's the only reason I know about it.

Insurance sometimes pays based on severity of alcoholism. Mine wouldn't kick in the difference after 6 weeks because I have no dui and no health issues...according to them I had no problems! Counselor kept telling them the amounts I drank but it wasn't enough for them.

Best of luck...

It's great that you want to help your mom but it really isn't your choice. She's an adult, she has to make the choice to want to change. This may not be what you want to hear but it's the truth. You can't force her to get help.

I don't mean to be a downer or anything but the only way treatment will work is if the user himself or herself is ready to commit to it.

I have been in your shoes, happygo. It's so frustrating! Does your mom have to stay local? I had the same issue here in New England -- my brother ended up in Florida (a few times). He has pretty good insurance, not sure what your mother has.

Good luck - she is lucky to have you in her corner!

In Maryland, I was in rehab for 2 weeks and then had the option to go live in a "sober house" afterward. I think my copay for the rehab was around $2K. My daughter went for 28 days and the copay for that was $3500.

Sober house rent seems to run around $200-$400/month. These are independently run and require "passing" an interview with the current house members. I encountered some places with even lower fees, but they required a stay of at least six months and that wasn't compatible with keeping my job...

I would start with calling her insurance company and see what places are covered. If it is only for 30 days, or even long term, going into a sober living home afterwards would be a very good idea. Though like mentioned above she needs to be 100% on board with everything and truly wants to get sober. Rehab won't magically fix people, but it often can be what's needed to finally put an end to the madness.

My inpatient in SoCal covered a lot of people on Medicare. I had private insurance and 5 weeks cost me a $1,500 deductible. Fortunately my insurance also paid for my outpatient follow-up program that was actually more expensive than the inpatient. Referrals from a medical doctor...primary care, or better yet, a psychiatrist.

There have got to be similar facilities in NorCal.

I second what someone said above about inpatient rehab. It can be hugely valuable to get someone off the train. But there needs to be some sort of continuing recovery after it ends or the relapse rate is huge.

Good centers will help with a recovery plan, setting up sober living post-rehab, etc.

Keep calling around. If they don't take her insurance, ask for referrals. You might not get two months, but you might get three weeks and an outpatient facility to follow up.

Good luck. I found my facility in the middle of a near-blackout bender
