51 months today

Well, here we are again, another month gone. Not much changing. It's kind of nice at this point in my sobriety to realize that I don't think much about alcohol anymore. I used to dwell on it, fantasize about it and generally stay obsessed with it. I have completely disengaged myself from the drinking scene, cut off the drinking buddies and just enjoy life on life's on term. Does this mean that all my problems are gone you may ask. No, far from it, however, it's a whole lot easier to deal with life when you are sober and not full of anxiety and despair when you are caught up in the bottle. If you are struggling right now, remember that you can do it. I drank for more than thirty years. I have four years sober and my life didn't really begin until I mentally decided that I wasn't going to be a slave to the bottle anymore. Have a good weekend everyone.

Great job on your sobriety. Alcoholism is nothing but smokescreen and mirrors. We don't need it. Period.

Good advice to a lot of us here. 4th try and I'm 10 days in.....and first time in a long time I'm enjoying the little things in life. I would never have this feeling under the influence....

Tnman,
Congratulations, you are a great role model.! I’m a little bit over 100 days in and I’ve read up on your early history - how’s your gout doing? Did you get your uric acid level tested lately?

Unfortunately my gout is not manageable without medication. I take a daily Allopurinol. Could be worse. My health in general is very good nowadays. I have lost weight and try to stay active. Before I was just drunk and consuming copious amounts of alcohol and empty calories.

Sorry to hear that, but it seems that Allopurinol is a pretty solid long-term solution anyways. Gout has one good side for me: I use it as a convenient excuse when people ask me why I’m not drinking - much easier than giving longwinding explanations!
