From what i know . . . if you get the shakes the day after drinking, or when you need a drink the tapering off to quitting should be medically supervised...
if you can go a day without drinking and not have any thing more than cravings is probably a good sign to quit for a 2nd day, and so on, and so on...
The story on the actor is sad, it really could happen to anybody.

Everyone should seriously read this. A lot of us who quit did the same thing he did. Anyone who is thinking about quitting see your doctor. It will be the best money you spent. The truth is you cannot judge the withdrawl by how it goes. The way it works is you end up on the floor with a seizure.
That's really sad. It doesn't have to be that way. I hope anyone reading this will honestly consider whether they need a medically supervised detox. If you're not sure, better safe than sorry.
Sad....and not an easy way to go. I have almost no memory of me detoxing this last time.
I know my neighbor found me and got me to the hospital. I spent a few days unconscious and then i woke up in another ambulance being transported to another hospital. I spent some more time there and then my next memory is being in rehab where I was for a good 4 months.
Scary.
