Friend fell off the wagon the other day

A friend of mine (alcoholic-sober for four years) fell off the wagon the other day for no apparent reason. This individual was my inspiration to evaluate my own drinking problem which ultimately encouraged me to try sober for a change. I'm not sure what to say or feel about this to help him back to sober, I'm way too new at this in my own recovery.

Maybe there is a lesson in here somewhere. It is really tough for someone to fall after such a long time sober. Sometimes they don't make it back. I have been sober a while and I am always interested to find out what was happening, or not happening, prior to the relapse. Putting aside all excuses, just find the basic facts.

It is a wonderful thing for an alcoholic to be able to learn from someone else's mistakes.

You are right, you can listen to your friend- show appropriate support by having a coffee....BUT you cannot rescue them. Your own journey is (as you said) your focus in recovery. Empathy for you and your friend..

What Phoenix says is true.

I've seen many noble and well meaning newcomers try and help a relapser and both end up floundering...

As antithetical as it may feel, focus on your recovery, and let your friend focus on his.

He must know a few things to have been sober for 4 years

Sorry to hear about your friend. All you can do is offer your support and continue to focus on your own recovery.

You can't control the actions of others. Just don't drink because you probably know where that leads.
