Food helpers during earily recovery
Food helpers during earily recovery
I'm just curious what helped you all during the first few months getting sober in the theme of foods and soft drinks. Thought this would be interesting to share.
Here is my top five:
1. Bottled water by the gallons (costs more than my cheap vodka habit did) the stuff in the square bottles
2. Gummy bears by the pound the good German brand
3. Refrigerator pickles or gas station pickles in a pouch
4. Diet Coke (for the caffeine)
5. Bacon flavored sunflower seeds

1) Bodybuilding type protein powder added to milkshakes
2) Fish
3) Lots of Coke ( the drink )
4) Bananas
5) Brown rice
Doesn't sound very exciting does it ? It's not actually bad at all though.
I've got a very poorly liver so my food choices have to reflect that fact.

I don't consume sugar, but when I stopped drinking, indulging in a bowl of ice cream helped a lot with the cravings. After about 3 months, I didn't really need it anymore and was able to stop eating it.
Ooh good thread! I can't say my diet would win any prizes for health but the following have helped me in the first few weeks:
1. Water.......pints of it at a time
2. Bananas.....only thing I ate at first
3. Porridge.......easy to eat at first
4. Coffee........tut tut I know but I love It!
5. Cake.......ginger, Madeira, carrot...... my naughty bed time treat of choice! Actually my anytime treat of choice!
6. Salad and fruit......get it down me for vitamins and to get the old bowels sorted (sorry guys tmi!)
7. Herbal tea.......on an evening it's nice and soothing and doesn't keep me awake
8. Cranberry and soda.......my adult drink of choice if I am out
I am eating a lot more sweet things but for now I don't really care. I'm 58 days in and can see me attempting to cut them out soonish but not yet.
Bacon sunflower seeds????!!!!!! That's a new one for me haha xx

When I first got sober ice cream helped with my sugar cravings. After a while it caused me to gain weight so I started changing my diet. Strawberry's and bananas helped me. I later got into juicing fruit and vegetables, and eventually changed my whole diet. Eating healthier foods can do so much for your body.
1. Tons of water
2. Pickles
3. Lots of spinach salads with a ton of veggies
4. Eggs
5. Herbal teas
6. Diet Coke
I WANT the ice cream sooo bad, but I want my pre drinking body back even more. Hence all the low carb stuff.

Sugar is still a big thing for me at almost 16 mo. Ice cream became a go to somewhere around 60 days, once my appetite came back (I was VERY sick when I quit and could barely manage two meals a day most days, for some weeks).
Like others, tons of water. Actually, tons of anything to drink- I always have something with me. I especially like Diet Sprite when I get tired of the "taste" of just water.
Salads. With all kinds of interesting stuff- fruit, different kinds of lettuce, maybe a veggie like green beans, chicken or not.
Fruit- especially bananas and berries.
I try to have food on hand so I never get starving. Since I work in a restaurant, sometimes it isn't possible to eat lunch or dinner at a "normal" time so I have stuff like snack bags with mixed nuts, One bars (the birthday cake flavor is great and they only have 1g sugar), fruit, yogurt, Babybels....
I have an active job and have started running and doing yoga regularly, so I really seek balance on the food end and let myself enjoy that ice cream still

During the first month of sobriety I was very depressed so I didn't eat much - I lost about 15 to 20 pounds.
As time went on my appetite returned and I then replaced my drinking habit with an overeating habit and I was eating a lot of crap.
I had my annual physical and blood work done last month and my cholesterol was dangerously high.
I am now only consuming 2500 calories or less per day and eating healthy foods. I already dropped 12 pounds in 3 weeks.
I feel a lot better since I have been eating less and better foods.

Lots of coffe
Club soda/sparkling water
Gingerale
Lots of water
Fresh veggies & salads
eggs
chicken
broth/soup
soda crackers
I like pasta and rice as comfort food for sure, and good ol ramen noodles for those broke times.
I really crave salt and protein more than carbs tho. I consume most sugar in my coffee and pop, when I have it.
The only candy I really eat are sour soothers/keys whatever you want to call them.
I can eat those by the kilo, until my tongue bleeds
