Stopped - Today

Hey all,

I'll keep this brief! I've been drinking for the past 5 years heavily and have stopped now and again on health kicks but restarted thinking I could stop easily.

Drinking has caused me numerous problems, as it normally does with everyone.

I decided to stop today and I'm moving abroad from the UK next month to escape the culture and start afresh. It was a bit of a nightmare getting past 10pm tonight without going and buying alcohol but I managed it.

I've created this thread to help keep me motivated

Good luck all!

Last drinking date: 22/05/2017

That is good but the bad thing is you are taking you with you.

Moving doesn't cure alcoholism.

Escape the culture? Where is this magical place where nobody drinks?

Hi all!

Didn't sleep much last night but a lot of that was due to my mind being active about other things as I've a busy week ahead and left everything to the last minute.

Today I haven't even thought about alcohol, I only remembered about it as I'd still had the forum tab open on my browser!

Easy days

Hope you are all well and thank you for the support!

Great going Gas7!

I stopped yesterday as well.

Place you mind and energy on other things and believe in yourself.

You can do it and live a much better life as well!

The UK has a culture of very heavy drinking. It's not unique in the world in that, but many people go out with the sole purpose of getting hammered. Almost everyone I know drinks way too much and thinks nothing of it.

Gaz - I have just come back to the UK after emigrating, it can be good, but it's not a bed of roses. You'll have some stress to deal with and maybe loneliness too. Be prepared for that and plan for it.
Good luck buddy. It's probably too late for me, I have a failing liver - but it sounds like you have a great chance.

If you say so. I live in the USA and everyone I used to hang with drank way too much and thought nothing of it - it's not a UK thing, it's an alcoholic thing.

Horray for those of you who have stopped today! Looking forward to cheering you both on as you manage and conquer the world without medication.

Thank you bud!

I've travelled a lot over the past two years and been to many countries. People are always amazed at how much we drink.

Yeah I've thought about that and I'll still keep it in mind
Sorry to hear about your liver, I hope you can get it under control and feel better soon.

IMO it is both an alcoholic thing and a cultural thing. I'm American but lived abroad and in the UK the towns and certainly larger cities are built around the local pub & there are many. The row homes make for an easy stumble home. All things social begin or end at the pub. Its home away from home. Sure there is food (enter the Gastro pub), but it's mainly pint after pint. It's hard to articulate. I can only say it's different, culturally. I'm unsure that there is a drinking age in England, so they start pretty young legally, having grown up in the pub watching football (soccer). That may be the best way to show the difference in drinking...lol. Sunday; Americans watching football at home with friends getting hammered v. English watching football at the pub getting sauced. Think of it as a sports bar on every third corner, with more a charm and rain. Some people drink socially & can stop and others? Well, we get obliterated. If that makes any sense?! I can see the POV that there is a cultural difference.
