It almost killed me This is hard to write about because when i think about it, it scares me so much. It was last year, around September at some point. I remember i went to the mall, i had bought a large bottle of white rum. When i returned home i was so happy to click open that cap and start downing shots. I was actually drinking it quite fast. I would down a shot, then drink some coke zero to ease the need to gag. I think i drank near enough the whole bottle in just a little over an hour. I've had blackouts before. But this was different. I woke up on my bathroom floor. My vision was blurry, my hair was covered in clear vomit and i had wet myself too. It was after this incident i stopped drinking liqueur in particular. I was shocked when i read of death from alcohol. The symptoms were exactly like mine...Only i was lucky my body was strong enough to keep breathing. It's humiliating to think...I did that to myself.. I almost killed myself. I would have caused my family and friends unbearable grief. But i thought I'd share this with you guys. If anyone else here had any similar experiences please share. Alcohol can be so dangerous. Thanks for reaching. x |
Lucky Cat- fyi, in the stories section, I have a story. |
This happened to you back in Sept. of last year, luckycat? What have you done to stay sober since your last drink? It took getting into a horrible accident in Feb 1990 spending 10 days in the hospital returning home to heal quit well taking my medicine till I didn't need them any longer. Come August 1990, I decided to try and do some control drinking to only try to end my life of being a failure as a wife, mom, and drinking. That attempt failed thank God and family stepped in placing me into the hands of those capable of teaching me about the dangers of addiction and its affects on me and those around me. I look back on that experience before, during and after alcohol and can surely see how quickly the progression of my addiction was from Feb to Aug that it reminds me of how dangerous and serious it was. I'm glad I became willing, openminded and honest over the past 26 yrs to remain teachable about the dangers of addiction and how quickly and repaid it can progress over a short amount of time. Today I continue to pass on my own ESH with newcomers and esp. hope because if I can stay sober each day incorporating an effective program of recovery taught to me yrs ago, then so can many who follow. :) |
When I was about 13 or 14 I drank most of a bottle of screw driver. When I awoke next day I had vomited in my sleep. There was an orange stripe from my pillow, over the side of the bed, and on the carpet below was a pile of peanuts. I was horrified, and felt sick as a dog. I grabbed mum's hoover, and sucked up the mess, making an even bigger mess. Mum was not happy. For weeks after, everytime she hoovered the house she got the smell of vomit. I didn't realise at the time, but many people die from inhaling vomit while intoxicated. God must have put me on my side that night. And I learnt a valuable lesson. I never drank screwdriver again. Even the thought of it made me feel ill. But beer and rum, and anything else, that was a different story. The big fright was totally ineffective in inspiring me to stay sober. |
Things like this are so terrifying. I'm glad you managed to survive that. It's such a reality check to wake up in that state. I tend to try and drink earlier to avoid this. I'm usually sick before bed after drinking vast amounts, so by the time I'm going to sleep most of it is out my system. It's horrible how often I am sick though, I hate throwing up my food. Every time I'm sick and feel disgustingly ill because of alcohol I say I'll never drink again but by the time I'm sober I forget how bad I felt. I'm scared something like this will happen to me though. That would be such a horrible way to go :( |

About 25 years ago I had a similar experience. I was at a bar that I hung out at regularly and I was on a mad rampage to get wasted. I was drinking whiskey and also wandering around the bar picking up other peoples drinks and chugging them. I blacked out during this and woke up on my friends couch covered in food. I then proceeded to walk back to the bar in the middle of the night to get to my truck - falling down several times on the way. Later I was told I exposed myself to a female friend and offered to have sex with her. In 1993 when I got a DUI I have no memory of getting in my car and driving. I woke up in a jail cell at 4am and didn't know were I was. I found out later I was belligerent to the cops and I also heard from a barmaid that I was refused liquor because I was so wasted and they gave my a glass of water that I dumped on the bar in anger. Scary stuff. I have many, many more stories but you get the picture. Every drunk has the same stories. |

I've always loved wine, so i just started drinking that instead.. It was only since last week I've really pushed myself to stop again. I'm absolutely broke because of buying alcohol, and it's been effecting my mind and performance. I've tried control drinking too. I'd say I'll just have one bottle.. But I'd find myself going out to the local garage to buy another bottle.. Congratulations for staying sober and getting your life back on track. Really, it's always so inspiring to hear successful stories ^^. |

I checked in once(4 years ago) at the local treatment center detox. I remember feeling nauseous like I never felt before in my life with the awareness that I must stay awake lest I fall asleep and choke on my own vomit. Thankfully after a few wide awake hours the feeling passed. In early September of 2016 I remember the pressing need for sleep so I could work the physically demanding job I had at the time the next morning. It had been a few nights since I had last slept soundly so I stupidly took a dose of Trazadone, beer and muscle relaxants all at once thinking it would knock me out. It nearly did. For good. I suddenly felt an extreme shortness of breath and a tightness in my chest. I spent the next 30 minutes with a sense of impending doom and alerted my wife to keep a close watch over me. Despite several scary moments of gasping for breath in my sleep, I made it through the night. The toll alcohol took on my body and the not to smart decisions I made to deal with it all nearly killed me also. I never want to put myself in those situations again. Thanks for the reminder. |
How are you today, LC? |
