Movies about alcoholism ?

Its no surprise to me how alcohol/drugs/etc are advertised as the thing to do at so many times and in so many ways in movies.

I recently saw "Flight" with Denzel Washington being a drunk pilot. How people mange that, or being a drunk taxi diver, etc, is beyond me. In the movie, the night before, when he finds all that booze...its scary. He knows and we know, don't do it, but he does.

What are some others that that deal with trying to quit, or being destroyed by it ?

Leaving Las Vegas had a HUGE impact on me. Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue. I was floored...it is an older movie but I don't want to ruin it by telling you what happens...Tragic example of alcoholism.

I like the grace movies better, there is one called "My name is Sarah" 2007. Its one I will watch every few years, very up-lifting for the road of recovery.

I am here to tell you...that movie did some emotional damage to my being! Nicholas is screwed up in real life as well. I think he went belly up financially. Such talent. What a shame.

There the Sandra Bullock movie "28days" that's good also. Accidentally caught that the other night.

28 days was good! Another good OLD movie ...I'll Cry Tomorrow.

Not really a movie about addiction but, "Hacksaw Ridge"...Does touch on it, in how it made an impact(the parts that talk about/show it really had an impact on me) on the main guys life..Great true story also!

Loved Flight.

How about "Clean and Sober" with Michael Keaton? (Clean and Sober (1988) - IMDb)

OR

"When a man loves a woman" ? with Meg Ryan (When a Man Loves a Woman (1994) - IMDb)

MsCooterBrown 03-15-2017 10:14 PM

All good ones cejay. I haven't seen Flight but have seen the others. Will have to try to find it...

Oldie... Days of Wine and Roses, Pretty heartbreaking.

theVman31 03-15-2017 11:59 PM

"My name is Joe"
Ken Loach.

Hector.
Jake Gavin.

A real golden oldie, The Lost Weekend with Ray Milland.

A more recent one, Crazy Heart with the great Jeff Bridges.

BTW, both won Oscars for those particular roles.

I like The Verdict a lot, Paul Newman ftw.

"Barfly" starring Mickey Rourke is a must see for any recovering alcoholic. Rourke plays the part of a very intelligent poet with the capacity to be rich and famous but throws it all away to be a degenerate, near homeless alcoholic living in a bad neighborhood. Unfortunately being a hopeless alcoholic is what inspires him to be a great poet so he is doomed to the life.

Yes, "Leaving Las Vegas" is awesome too.

The version of "A Star is Born" with Kristofferson is good too.

I own a copy of all three of these flicks.

Yes I love that film. I've watched it so many times. The part where she's at treatment and finally "gets it" always makes me tear up.

I just watched "Bad Lieutenant" a few days ago. Fair warning: the gratuitous drug and alcohol abuse is, in my opinion, not even top of the list of what makes it a controversial and not-appropriate-for-all-viewers film. It's not exactly a redemption/happy ending movie either. But Harvey Keitel plays one of the most believable addicts I've ever seen.

Days of Wine and Roses was a heartbreaker.
