Movies about alcoholism ?
Days of Wine & Roses - a very old movie - but impactful as well.
IMHO, without doubt, the best movie about alcoholism ever. It achieves what so few other films do, which is a realistic portrayal of recovery. 55 years later, and that movie is still hard to watch.
So many others grind my gears with depictions of alcoholics who crash and burn, go to rehab and "poof", all cured for life, become even more successful, loved, etc., or depictions where an alcoholic gets help from a magical guru type who straitens up their life in two or three short scenes, a' la Bagger Vance.

The most impactful movie for me to watch has been The Days of Wine and Roses, because it so accurately presents the dichotomy of alcoholism.
Namely, miracles on the one hand and tragedies on the other.
I also like Leaving Las Vegas quite a bit.
Incidentally, Clean and Sober came out a month or 2 before I went into treatment and it played for a good while at the theatre in my neighborhood.
I drove past that marquise everyday, knowing that I desperately needed to be clean and sober and that the whole notion seemed so impossible.
By that point, alcohol had become like water to me.

When Love is Not Enough - The Lois Wilson Story
Some very tough scenes to watch of Bill W and his battle with alcoholism. Lois reminds me a lot of myself.
When a Man Loves a Woman - Also a great one and a tearjerker for sure. Does a great job of portraying not only the addict but how its destruction on the family
Leaving Las Vegas - Saw for the first time recently and did not like at all. Much too dark, both he and her.

Great Topic
Almost all of those movies meant something to me at one time or another. I remember seeing The Verdict in a course on law when I was in school. When he can not pick up the shot because his hands were shaking so much I remember thinking how can anyone let themselves get that far? Little did I know. I also remember seeing Harvey Kitel, in Bad Lieutenant, with a silent acknowledgement that I had to keep binges from getting to that point. Just amazing those were some really good movies. I can see little pieces of me and the progression of damage in all of them.
