smiling today

Three years sober today. In many ways three years is nothing. But I know that when I first got sober, even three days or three weeks seemed impossible. I also know that although on the outside my life doesn't look so different (same partner, same job, same cat, same family, same history of abuse is early teens, etc. ALL of which I drank on) life feels so different now. All of those AA promises have materialised - some quickly, others slowly. But those slowest to materialise seem to be the most precious.

...We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.
We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.
We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.
We will see how our experience can benefit others.
That feeling of uselessness and selfpity will disappear.
We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.
Self-seeking will slip away.
Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.
Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.
We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.
We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.

I am very grateful for what I have now, and the way my life looks and feels to me in recovery compared with how it looked and felt when actively alcoholic, so thankyou to all of the lovely people on here who have been there with support and encouragement since I joined up. You're all amazing .

Congratulations :) very inspiring. The italics I am guessing is in the AA big book? If so, I think I need to get this book.

Yes. They are the AA promiees. On pages 83 -84 if the Big BookI believe. The book's available to read for free online, from Amazon or for Kindle / cloud reader,or for just a few pounds or dollars at a meeting. Never been easier to get hold of a copy. The other book I'd recommend is Living Sober . X

Happy birthday BB. Well deserved.

Actually, those promises are just the ninth step promises. We will be amazed before are halfway through ( step nine). Most of the other steps have promises too. I particularly like the third, fifth and tenth step promises.

congratulations BB. I was impressed by the fact that you didn't know if you were going to succeed but went for it anyway. It's extra encouraging for those who are struggling with self-doubt.

Congratulations!

I too have struggled for many years to string together three days or three weeks, so three years is just awe-inspiring.

Thanks for posting to show those of us starting out that it is possible.
