Alcoholism is something that gets nothing but worse over time, and you are correct, there is nothing in the world that is going to stop it unless he chooses to do so himself.

musiclady, i misread. you mentioned verbal abuse, not physical. the 'physical' referred to the effects on him of his drinking.
