Doug, I went to AA meetings for a few months in the beginning and they give out coins (some call them chips) for length of sobriety. I thought that first month would take six years to pass, I was so uncomfortable in my skin. When I went up to receive my 1 Month coin I took my 24 Hour coin and told the guy I was turning it in - recycling. He said, "We do things one day at a time here."
I said, "I'm never going back there!"

You are all right.
Even without AA my sister in law would have probably been in the same mess.
My point was that my wife is against all forms of self-help methods, psychiatry, or groups like AA. She prides herself on being strong and dealing with life on her own in her own way. She chooses to use alcohol to hide her pain - the way I did for 27 years.

dealing with things my own way got me to the doors of AA. early on I hadda problem and a man in AA could read it all over me. after the meeting he asked me of there was something on my mind.
"yeah, but ill figure it out."
he gave a pretty big laugh and said,"and how has figuring things out on your own been workin for ya?"
I learned later he laughed like that because he had the same problem- a wee bit of an ego problem.
humility never hurt anyone
lack of it has destroyed nations.
