Movies that make you glad you quit drinking I just finished watching "The Doors" from 1991, with Val Kilmer. Not sure why I just now decided to watch it but I've sure got a better perspective on what drinking can do to you (me) than I would have had in 1991. It was painful, sad and disturbing to watch him drinking like that with the very predictable results. It could have been me. (Not the rockstar with ED, part. The F*ck up your life and drop dead from abuse part.) Anyone else want to nominate a movie to discourage a life of drinking? |
Amy, the Amy Winehouse documentary. Watched it when I was 2 weeks sober. Felt much the same way you did. Alcohol robbed us of an immense talent in Miss Winehouse. She got clean from drugs and then lost her life to booze. |
Leaving Las Vegas comes to mind as far as movies go. As far as talented folks go Jim Morrison is one that always come to mind for me as a life cut short by drugs. One of the ones that moves me the most is Layne Staley. He was gifted beyond imagination with his voice and songwriting skills. He also seemed to be a truly nice person that just never was able to get out from under his addiction. I still have a hard time listening to some of their songs. |
Affliction with Nick Nolte is a great movie about an alcoholic family that most people have never heard of. |
Barfly starring Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway. |
Flight and pay it forward Girl on a train is at the theatres right now it's pretty good |

Girl on the train Last July I listened to the audiobook of this driving from Virginia Beach to Cleveland, Ohio. Good story. |
Leaving Las Vegas was a movie my mom made me watch when I was still in high school. It would be difficult for me to watch today. Isn't there a film of "The Lost Weekend?" "Days of Wine and Roses" |
Seriously: Flight. Jokingly: Knocked Up I have When A Man Loves a Woman and want to watch it soon. It's about a married couple, wife is an alcoholic. |
The Rose |
Official "TRAIN SPOTTING 2" trailer . . . CHECK OUT this official trailer for the upcoming: "TRAIN SPOTTING2" Don't such addicts mainly 'stumble' into these most 'imprisoning' drugs? . . . Meth, Heroin, Cocaine, etc. I was hooked IN DAYS after a codeine prescription! Luckily, I had experience fighting addiction, and quit that quick! . (Oh, I'll try again to post the trailer link soon, and its on U-Tube) . |
Days of Wind and Roses EXCELLENT!!!! 1962 starring Jack Lemon An alcoholic marries a young woman, whom he systematically addicts to booze so they can share his "passion" together. |
girl on the train |

Requiem for a Dream. It's about several people with different addictions and is a very good movie. I probably couldn't watch it again though because I'd find it so upsetting for me personally, though it certainly discourages a life of active addiction. |

Speaking of Staley...Shannon Hoon was another one. -Deeply gifted. Died on a tour bus leaving a young daughter behind. |
I had no idea about girl on the train! Going to have to watch that! |
Leaving Las Vegas. Another one I'd recommend is Withnail and I. It's very amusing but it doesn't glorify addiction in any way; quite to the contrary. |
