Not really sure. I think it has something to do with my in-laws view of exercise (note many them are unhealthy, obese or always dying of something!).

To them exercise is self-serving and unnecessary. When I started a running program a few years ago, I got flak for it. If I ride for anything other than commuting, I got flak about it.

Screw them.

Nothing personal, but your in-laws have some odd ideas about selfishness. I suggest you ignore them and their beliefs, at least as much as possible.

Trust me, I've had them on *ignore* for a few years now. Actually, anything that didn't help my sobriety gets that special status these days.

Great and good luck with your your goals and endeavors; they can only help you and your family.

Like something to obviously benefit yourself, but also to show others that it is possible to overcome addiction?

In example:
Lose weight/get fit.
Write a book & get published.
New career move.
Go back to school.

Thoughts on this?? I am really considering training for a full marathon...
Not selfish at all!!! Go for it :-)

I'm actually leaning toward endurance cycling.... on a fixed gear! Not sure why...
