Checking in... Get tested!

Hi everybody.. I'm a long time member. Checking in, I feel great, sober life is wonderful and I have a new child.

Recently I asked my doctor to order a calcium CT scan which he complied with. I got my results and they were not good, especially for a 41 year old. I've begun to treat my newly found heart disease (with NO symptoms) very agressly. This decision to get the test may have saved my life.

If you are over 40, ask your doctor about the test. Anyone that has had one and would like to share, please do!

Thanks! Stay sober!

Glad you are taking care of your health ImReadyToQuit. I would agree that consulting with a doctor before any tests is a good idea.

I'm so glad you asked for the test, ImReadyToQuit!

I've never heard of this, I'll be running it by my cardiologist.

Thank you!

There is a film that came out last year called The Widowmaker.. It's available for rent on youtube for like 1.99.. Definitely worth watching. I'm sure we've all known people we thought were the picture of health that dropped dead. They call the calcium score the mamagram for the heart.

Am going to my cardiologist anyway and will ask about this. Thanks so much for the heads up.

If I can also give a plug for everyone having a colonoscopy or at least the prescreen test. I have had two friends die of colon cancer who must have had it from a young age.

Turning 40 in August - have had lots of bloodwork done since I stopped drinking in Feb but not sure about this one. I will look through my lab reports soon to see if I am missing important things, and also talk to my dr about this test.

Glad you are being treated and getting as healthy as possible. So important, especially now that we are grown but not too cooked.

If you have a zero score, doctors are now referring to that as a 15 year warranty. Chances of a cardiac event (regardless of other factors) is under 1%. If you find that you do have a score, you can get out ahead of the disease before something terrible happens.

Imready - did you have any other risk factors for heart disease? i'm considering this scan. would you mind sharing what you're doing as prevention in relation to your score? was your score bad enough to recommend some sort of intervention (stent)?

I am waiting for an appointment from the hospital to have one. My heart didn't do well during last withdrawals.
I'm sorry your results are not good, but at least you found out in time so it can be treated!
I'm dreading having mine done, already have high blood pressure and being treated for the tachycardia brought on by withdrawal, cholestarol way up there and on a special diet, will probably need statins if that doesn't work... just know this isn't going to turn out well!
