Dying Too Young

I have a heavy heart this morning for just this reason.

A high school friend of mine dropped dead night before last. She went out to the back patio with her husband - and was gone. We don't know why - it was not alcohol related. She was 40 and had little children.

A dear childhood friend of mine was just diagnosed with aggressive Stage Two breast cancer. She is a brave, fine, wonderful person and has a great support system - but this is the "really serious" kind of cancer.

Because I have been sick of the past few years - at my own hand- and then came so close to death this winter - at my own hand- and doctors said seriously I could have as little as a year to a year and a half to live if I did not stop drinking immediately - I think a lot about what we, as alcoholics, do:

We contribute mightily to our own deaths.
We take it out of God's plan for us.
We don't treasure the life we should have - whether it will be short or long.
In short, we play God.

I don't ever want to do that again.
We don't know when we will go, and whatever our spiritual beliefs, there is a path our life will take. I believe that path is a plan God creates; you may believe otherwise but the result is the same- we only get one life.

Grateful to have a life back, to live as long as I can and do it well.

Psalm 102:24-26 So I said: “Do not take me away, my God, in the midst of my days; your years go on through all generations. "
