Last drink 8 hours ago

I need help again and I'm scared! I don't want to go thru withdrawals.. I've been researching all my options and I'm so overwhelmed. I'm 30 and I've been self medicating for the last 2 months. It's gotten bad this time.. I know I'm hurting myself and I can't stop.

Hey Tans, the best thing you can do is go to your doctor and be real honest about your drinking and desire to quit. They can help you through the withdrawals. Just know the worst of withdrawals are only a few days. You can do it!

I went to a detox center here where I live. Stayed 7 days, and didn't have any withdrawals. You should check and see if there is one where you live. The one I went to bills acording to your income, so I didn't have to pay anything!

Hopefully I can find something like that, thank you.

Congrats on your decision to quit! I'd also recommend seeing your doctor or a detox/rehab specialist if you can. Better to be safe than sorry. The good news is that withdrawals are only temporary, and this can be the last time you ever go through them if you choose.

Stick with us Tans your not alone

Tans 06-20-2016 07:33 AM

I'm so tempted to take a shot so I can feel normal and it's only 7:30 am.. I can't believe it's gotten this bad!! It's taking everything in me to stop myself.

fripfrop 06-20-2016 07:54 AM

Ah Tans, I know how you feel! I drank for exactly the same reason, but it's just putting things off! Unless you are going to stay drunk for the rest of your life you will have to come down sometime..that's what I was thinking 3 days ago anyway. How much worse it will be if you keep putting off stopping.
If you have the self control to just have "a few to feel normal"..and I don't, those will wear off in a few hours and you'll be back to feeling like you are now.
Do you think you have been drinking heavily enough to need a proffessional detox?
I didn't get one to stop..but I do feel like I am about to die when I do it alone.
A black pit of panic, shakes, sweats, can't eat or sleep...

I know withdrawals can be daunting and keep us stuck in our addiction way longer then we would like to admit, but you don't have to go through this alone!

Call your doctor ASAP and get an emergency appointment in so that he can help prescribe you medications to get your through this tough emotional and physical time. If they can't get you in, go to the hospital and that is a way to get immediate care. The hospital can help point you to a medical detox center, or if you are able to googling can be a wonderful resource.

Does your family know about your addiction? Coming clean with them and getting as much emotional support as you can if they are willing to give it can make a huge difference. (I didn't want to tell my whole family- grandparents, aunts, uncles, sister, brothers, mom, EVERYONE.. but once I did I had an army of people behind me.)

Please be safe. And we are all behind you, we have all been through it whether it was alcohol, heroin, or any other drug out there..we understand. YOU ARE NOT ALONE

You don't have to drink again, you don't ever have to feel this way again, you don't have to do it alone. Go see the doc and tell him the truth. He'll know exactly what to do to make it much much easier for you. Good luck.

You are right .. I'll just feel like this in a couple hours .. I don't want to drink again.. I might need it this time .. I am hoping to get by today and feel better tomorrow. I can't believe I'm back in the same place again. I just hate the shakes!!

Thanks. I finally came clean to my family yesterday.. I mean they knew it was an issue but we finally talked about it. I never throught my drinking was severe but the last 2 months it's been very bad.. Drinking in the morning to feel better!! Plus I know all these physical issues are from alcohol.. I'm trying to remind myself how good I feel when I'm sober. I'm going to make an appointment today for anxiety and go from there .. Hopefully I can get thru today.

fripfrop 06-20-2016 08:23 AM

Well if you start to feel really dodgy, I would get help.
The times I have had to take myself off to A&E, they couldn't do anything while I still had a certain level of alcohol in my system. What I mean is, if I felt especially ill and "had a couple" so I was able to get myself to hospital, they couldn't give me the de-tox medication, they won't if there is any alcohol in your system (not in the UK anyway)
But when I didn't, and I was going through full blown withdrawals, they did, and it worked a LOT better than drinking more.
And gives you a way out of the vicious cycle.
In my case, each time I started to drink after this happened..wasn't to stave off withdrawals (but thats why I perpetuated it) it was because I was demented and "forgot" about the anguish getting back off it causes.
If you don't start drinking again..even in 3 days, you won't believe you were feeling as bad as you are now

Tans 06-20-2016 08:29 AM

So far I haven't .. I'm really fighting it.. I think I am going to dump it out so there is no way I can drink it.

Sudz No More 06-20-2016 08:36 AM

You've just got to throw in the towel and give it up. Keeping it around is only going to end badly. If you are having dangerous withdrawals and can't get something from the doctor than maybe you need to taper. Bottom line though, you will never get beyond the addiction if you keep feeding it.

scintillady 06-20-2016 06:28 PM

It must be different in the UK, I guess. I went to detox and they definitely will start you on the program when you have alcohol in your system, in fact they know you will have it in your system when you go in, and then they get you started on the detox and monitor you as you come down from it. Every time you go through detox it gets worse, so if you can look at it that way it may give you more reason to get it out of the way sooner than later. I learned this the hard way.

fantail 06-20-2016 06:40 PM

I had a lot of alcohol in my system when I went to detox.

I did withdrawal alone many many many times, and it got scarier and scarier each time. Finally I went to detox and yes, if you have that option, do it. Especially now that your family knows and you've got people supporting you. It's no vacation but compared to doing it alone it almost feels that way.

Tans 06-21-2016 07:35 AM

Thanks for the info and support. I got thru day one and I feel better now .. Just woke up and I feel a little tired .. Hopefully today will be better and I don't feel anything new. I have a doctors appointment coming up so let's see what he says.

ScottFromWI 06-21-2016 08:51 AM

That's great news Tans, congrats on getting day 1 under your belt and great job on making the Dr. Appt . That shows a lot of courage and commitment on your part. Stay close to SR if you need us!
