Can a GP prescribe medicine to stop cravings for alcohol?

I'd really like to know if it's worth telling my GP at this stage, as if they can prescribe drugs to help me control the cravings, I'll happily take the help :)

How long was it until GP prescribed? Did they do all sorts of tests and ask all sorts of questions.

Yeah liver/kidney function test but I had it (Campral) within 1 week.

No questions really. My GP was really understanding actually. Just asked on my usage which is scary!!

My husband used Naltrexone. It didn't work for him. He was still drinking while taking the drug.

Hello Sammy,

My H's GP was a real source of support and help when my H finally got truthful with his addiction. It turned out the GP's brother had died from alcoholism and he was very knowledgeable. He did indeed prescribe some drugs to assist in my H stopping on his own when my H did not get into a local rehab.

I think telling the truth of your addiction to a MD is a good start to building honesty, getting expert help, and stopping isolation.

peace,

I tried Naltrexone. It definitely helped with cravings but made me dizzy / woozy so I decided I would just endure the cravings. Another option is Antabuse- makes you violently ill if you drink. Take it in the am before cravings begin. I MIGHT seek out a psychiatrist instead of a GP. The psychiatrist can help with identifying other things where you might be self medicating with the alcohol. Good luck. No one ever died of a craving but sometimes it feels like you will.

I had the exact same experience with it - I decided it wasn't worth taking because the side effects were worse than the cravings.
