Wow

It's hard to believe, but today is 7 years sober for me. My drinking days seem like a lifetime ago. That is why I keep coming here,so I can remember why I quit.
Last fall I went to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned, and the girl that cleans my teeth found a spot on my tongue that I wasn't aware of. To make a long story short,it was cancer. Just a little spot the size of a pencil tip. Just after the first of the year I had that cut out,and lymph nodes removed from my neck. The tongue part was the most painful thing I could have imagined. It was like having a couple pairs of vice grips clamped to the bottom of my tongue for 6 weeks or so.
Thank God I quit drinking long ago. I can just imagine how I would have gotten fallen down drunk over and over feeling sorry for myself . And again to "kill the pain". They prescribed me a huge bottle of Oxycodone for the pain. Which of course,if i was still drinking, that would have been pain killer #2. Booze would have still been #1 .
But since I was sober, I just "dealt with it". It is unbelievable how I think back to the way I used to think. When I was drinking,ANY situation like this was another excuse to get drunk. Now I can't imagine how I thought getting drunk to the point I can't remember what I did,and waking up with a hangover that would send a normal person the the emergency room would help.
I can't ever forget I am just 1 beer away from going back to that insanity.

Fred

You can have reasons, or you can have results, but you can't have both.

Seven years... What an absolute blessing; I'm so happy for you! And what a darned good thing you quit, since alcohol is a carcinogen. It wouldn't have helped matters any.

Keep on enjoying your sober life!
