Congratulations on 7 months and for coming here to check in when you're feeling a bit shaky.

It may be possible that the feeling of unreality is related to the naltrexone. You might want to search on this site or elsewhere to see if others have experienced that when they started on the medication. Better yet, give your psychiatrist a call.

I wanted to go the naltrexone route when I was still drinking (read intriguing things about The Sinclair Method) but wound up in a program that uses antabuse. That works for me. And I think I'm better off this way, at least for now.

I understand the unreality thing. On a day to day basis my experience is like Soberpotamus described... things are real and concrete in a way they haven't been in ages. But overall, yes. Sometimes when I did or said something while sleepy, for example, the next day it feels similar to if I'd done it drunk. Or sometimes when something slips my mind and I'm reminded, I feel as though I'd been drinking and forgotten. Even moods sometimes feel to me like drinking. I do have dreams fairly regularly where I realize that I've been drinking this whole time and just lying about it. Those are intense.

Congratulations on 7 months Acheleus :)

Acheleus 01-23-2016 11:38 AM

Yes Fantail I can relate to feeling like I have been drinking this whole time. It is almost as if I cannot trust myself or my memory is impaired.

naltrexone is being used in a weird way in the US -- in Europe to is used for people who do not want to stop and you take it before drinking to lower the risk of over indulging because when you drink you supposedly don't get the compulsion. Never tried it myself, but I do have my doubts about its efficacy for abstinence.

Long way of saying I would talk with our doctor about what you are feeling, and maybe do a bit more research on side effects and efficacy.

Seven months rocks -- congratulations.

Acheleus 01-23-2016 11:57 AM

I could not do that. I would just stop taking the pill so I could really drink.

I'm about a month behind you Ach. Totally worth it. Right on! It just gets better.

It is a good day to wake up sober and listen to Thelonius Monk with coffee. Being single and working on myself is important right now. Later I will study and play the piano then take a long walk. I can get better one day at a time. I am so glad to be seven months sober even though I have to look back and see how my drinking influenced so many poor decisions I made.
