Dear Alcohol,

I cannot go where you want me to go. I have suffered the slings and arrows, with complacency and lack of forethought, and it, you, have left me wanting. Wanting more from the quality and standards of my life.

I want healthy friends and a positive social life. You make me isolated, sitting alone at home. Even though we were friends, I was always ashamed of going out with you in public. You were a thing enjoyed in darkened rooms and at all hours of the day.

I want to feel healthy and proactive. You make me sick, ill, and completely unproductive. Projects fall by the wayside: chores, errands, homework, hitting the gym. Instead, you fill my days hiding under a blanket with the curtains pulled shut.

I want to start spending money on things I enjoy doing again, not wasting it on booze out of habit, social influences, or cravings. Activities and hobbies add to who I am. I can be quite witty, charismatic, and pleasant to be around while sober. Booze only subtracts from who I am. It dims my light. It kicks me when I am down.

I cannot go where you want me to go.....

A nice letter and so very true. And fortunately for all of us we can choose to not follow the path alcohol would have us take.
