Gamification as a way through recovery
Gamification as a way through recovery
Just heard a really interesting interview on the radio: Jane McGonigal: 7 ways gaming can improve your life - Home | q | CBC Radio
The woman suffered a head trauma and constructed a game (modeled on video games) as a coping mechanism. It worked wonderfully for her, and then for others with far more serious situations... terminal illnesses, etc. So then she researched it and found there's a lot of scientific backing for her approach.
In some ways it reminded me of a lot of common approaches to recovering from alcoholism. I recommend having a listen. It's thought provoking and it's short (20 mins of audio). I've worked in tech for a while and in my industry there's a lot of discussion of gamification as incentive for behavior. I've seen it work in that context. I didn't think of it as extending offline but it makes sense to me that it would.
I'll probably end up tracking down her book so I'll let you know what I think!
