One year sober
Hi folks, I have a year's sobriety in five days.
I was drinking too much, causing me all the usual insane problems, and I'd attempted to stop, with varying success, quite a few times.
I'd felt I was in excess for some years but then took a stressful job in China, where alcohol is cheap, strong, pure and available, and things got considerably worse.
I'm British and 46 and my break came when I made a trip to Africa, determined to not to drink while there, then during the trip following another long think I made it a permanent decision. A change of environment can indeed help.
The main piece of reasoning front and centre for me is-
*** The negative effects of alcohol are greater than the positive effects. ***
Alcohol of course is deceptive in that in the short term it looks like a fine idea. But the overall profit and loss account says a very, very different story.
Therefore I'll never drink again, and moreover the whole thorough falsity of the thing only gets clearer with time.
I've since also become a vegetarian!
Best, Sean

Brava, SMc! I wish logic had been enough for me, but, alas, it took major long detour through untenable suffering and insanity to come into alignment with logic. Which is odd, cuz I wrote college thesis on logic!
Well done, Sean. I agree, putting the news of your success forward is so important. It might make the difference to someone today so they too can empower themselves and start living again. Onward!
Your very welcome An achievement to be Proud of !! I try to help here as much as my anxiety allows . We in sobriety have to take care of ourselves first . " I learnt that here " If it feels right do it do it , if it causes you to be stressed out go slow ...
Sean, congratulations! That is an accomplishment to be proud of -- and I am proud of you.
Stop by the ol' SR Class of 8/13 sometime! I remember you shared some lovely photos from your remarkable journeys. Our class is smaller in number these days but still a few of us chugging along there. You have been missed.
Again, so happy for you!

Hey, many thanks all round, some interesting comments too, very kind.
I thought I'd write a post as I don't have too many people to share this with, and fewer who understand how problematic a thing it can be to tunnel your way out of this. My last drink was on the last day of September last year.
Another thing I think I've learnt is that if your circumstances begin to get stressful then do something about them no matter what it takes, rather than internalize them too much. Obviously that can be hard but beats being ruined yourself.
Nice to hear from Venecia and also advbike, amazing people... Yes I was here a couple of years ago during a very testing period indeed.
Live and learn. Best, Sean
