I don't know where this belongs but...
Today I stumbled upon a movie called Low Down, which tells the story of jazz pianist Joe Albany and his relationship with his daughter.
Albany loved his daughter very much, and vice versa, but he was a heroin addict and in the process subjected her to a lot of things a kid shouldn't have had to deal with.
Worse, her mother was an alcoholic. But not a functioning alcoholic in any sense, the kind of alcoholic who lived in week-to-week hotels and spent her days in the bar. And besides from being mostly out of the picture, when she was in the picture, the mother said some pretty cruel stuff to the daughter.
In the end the daughter learns from them, but from negative examples, and she turned out ok I guess. But it was really hard to watch what this girl (and some other kids exposed to the same environment) had to suffer as a result of her parents' addictions.
I guess I'm lucky that things haven't gotten nearly that bad, but seeing the movie reinforced my decision to try and stop now.
