Remembering a friend
Remembering my friend L on his birthday - wherever he may be (or not)
L was homeless and living on the NYC subway when he got sober and I wasn't far from behind, having spent many nights sleeping on the subway, park benches and in abandoned buildings. We were a couple of desperate drunks who by the grace of whatever found a better way. I used to hang out with him at his job as the night guy at a deli. I couldn’t sleep and we helped each other make it though the night. It got better. We got better.
When L left this world he was a sitting judge on the Queens County Supreme Court in the State of New York. A judge. Like WTF, tell me the universe doesn’t have a sense of humor. He used his position and his experience to help others like we were taught “in the rooms”.
Like they used to say in the old neighborhood, we done good for a couple of mutts. I never came close to being a judge, i barely made it out of high school, but I made it off that park bench to owning my own business and home.
For anyone reading this who is struggling, you don’t know where this journey will take you. If you’re thinking of giving up, give up tomorrow. Better yet stick around.
RIP your honor.

Nice Post CousinA.
I have met few Ls in the fellowship too. Thought they may no longer be here, their sobriety lives on among us. They touch many in their journey on this road.
