Anti depression medication helps?

I'm 30 years old and never taken any meds for depression
Although I feel that is my reason for grabbing the bottle. How helpful would that be as I have reservations about that stuff, ironically I know.

Welcome!

I have learned that anxiety is a symptom of alcohol withdrawal, which I used to experience on a daily basis. Once I got over the first weeks of withdrawal, my depression got better.

Alcohol is a huge depressant all by itself. If you quit drinking, you may well find that depression fades too.

Well I know my withdrawals are bad. It's when I stop drinking for weeks. Maybe 4 or 5 that I feel there are trigger that bring me into that place. I mean I don't throw depression around, but if it's the case, can curing that curve my desire to have "1"drink that leads to a weekly binge? I know it's basically replacing 1 substance with another but if that actually helps me become productive instead of a drunk for days at a time

Do you have insurance that covers Dr's or psychiatrists? They would be the best people to talk to about it.

I don't necessarily think of anti depressants as "substances" like I do with other things. I know lots of sOber people who take them as directed

anti depressants can help some people, but not everyone.

The best thing to do is talk to your Dr about your specific case

for what it's worth I don't believe all drugs are the same.

I used to take drugs in a way that diminished me and my life.

Things like anti depressants that I take now in recovery are about adding to the quality of my life.

My depression didn't clear up. I nearly went crazy trying to beat depression by white knuckling. Anti depressants work for me. U can always try ans stop them if they are not for you.

I am in recovery and find that anxiety meds have helped a lot. AA is a bad place to ask for medical advice. Its amazing how everyone in the rooms thinks they are a psychiatrist. My anxiety only got worse after I got sober. Working the steps didn't help. Just be honest with a good psychiatrist. Tell them about your substance abuse. Also, did I mention BE HONEST. I almost forgot to mention that BEING HONEST is important. PS, don't forget to be honest.

Be wary of citalopram (celexa) it made me manic and be able to drink even more than usual.

Actually, you're not replacing one addictive substance for another addictive substance. SSRI anti-depressants are not addictive, they are not a drug that users crave etc.

I suggest a long talk with your Dr.

Anti depression medication helps?

With the symptoms of depression it helped me tremendously.
With the symptoms of alcoholism not a bit.
I was sober a year before being prescribed an anti depressant.

Did you have problems with depression before you started drinking? I did, for decades, so antidepressants were and are important to me. They restore the chemical balance in my brain and level the playing field for me.

Helped me.
Wouldn't be without them, but no problems with addiction or craving them.
I get no high from them.
No withdrawal if I do not take them.
To me they just regulate my life a bit more.
I think clearer.
My thoughts are not negative all the time.
I don't feel like I am wandering around under a rain cloud all the time.

However they are not a magic cure.
I see them as another tool that helps.

Much better I think to get a professionals advice than self medicate yourself with booze.

I was on antiDs before I started drinking. Drinking made the antiDs much less effective. Now that I'm sober, my meds work right and keep my depression manageable. I will probably always be on them and that's ok. They make a huge difference in my mood.

My doctor fed me the same line once. SSRIs are not addictive, to him, but then neither is alcohol, to him.

For me the feeling gained from drinking was the addictive part, more so than the substance itself. I now get that feeling through living the AA program.

Anti depressants are fine for treating depression, but are just as dangerous as other drugs if used as a substitute for alcohol, to get that feeling that alcohol used to give.

As someone else said, it comes down to the honesty of the individual with his doctor.

They may not be addictive, but some experience some serious withdrawal effects and tapering is essential.

As others have mentioned, its a decision you will have to make. I'm not offering advice, but I am on them and they changed my life for the better. But it is a commitment (potentially life long). Some people can take them for a short period of time to get through a difficult time, but I believe most on this board will tell you they take it daily.
