Is medication necessary to quit drinking? Does tapeti g work Scared and trying to quit for the 3rd time in my life. Not sure if the withdraw is in head. Been having 2 drinks a day Monday -Thursday and anywhere from 3-6 beers Friday Saturday Sunday. Really scared |
I meant does tapering work or is that stupid |
Sometimes medication is prescribed during withdrawals to prevent seizures or other things, but it's something you'd need to see a doctor about of course. Sometimes meds are also prescribed if you participate in an supervised or inpatient detox, but again you would need to see a doctor or a counselor/detox center to be certain if it is necessary. Tapering is not usually effective as it's merely just another form of moderation - which is not possible for many of us. There are some places that still recommend it, but again you'd need to see your doctor to find out for sure. |
Thanks |
Yes, if you're concerned, then talking to your dr is the way to go. Tapering is really difficult for alcoholics. For me, it ended up being and up and down thing and very frustrating. Stopping for good was really much easier. |
Tapering doesn't work for me. Once I have one drink I have to have another half dozen or more. I avoid alcohol entirely because if I don't, I end up binge drinking until I pass out. I have a problem with alcohol. I kept repeating the same cycle until I finally accepted that. |
If you are committed, truly committed to sobriety, you should be able to quit without meds or tapering. If you are concerned about withdrawals, consult with your doctor, be honest about your drinking and your desire to quit. |
I am committed I have already told my family. My wife is on my side. Now to do it right. I quit for 8 months in 2010. I am building a good support foundation of people to keep me accountable |

Really scared Medical detox is not always required but it is wise to stay close to your doctor. I would resist medication if at all possible and I would argue with my doctor over that because I have seen so many new addictions arise out of medication given during detox. I would only take meds if it became too dangerous not to. Incidentally, even with the quantities I was drinking, I did not require medical detox or medication. |
I take Antabuse to remove the temptation to drink. All I do is take it and then no more thoughts of drinking. Works very well for me. As long as I keep taking it. |
How are you doing aflo? D |
