Desperation Defined

I was doing some serious reflection tonight and decided to read the definition of "desperate." We all know what it means but sometimes I think it is powerful to actually read the dictionary definition. I did not stop drinking until I was truly desperate. Here is the definition, food for thought.

des·per·ate

adjective

1. reckless or dangerous because of despair, hopelessness, or urgency: a desperate killer.
2. having an urgent need, desire, etc.: desperate for attention; desperate to find a job.
3. leaving little or no hope; very serious or dangerous: a desperate illness.
4. extremely bad; intolerable or shocking: clothes in desperate taste.
5. extreme or excessive.
6. making a final, ultimate effort; giving all: a desperate attempt to save a life.
7. actuated by a feeling of hopelessness.

The one about clothing made me laugh! However, the definition (intolerable, shocking) fits alcoholism perfectly.

6. making a final, ultimate effort; giving all:
What triggered my Spiritual Awakening was a "final ultimate effort".

I gave up my fight. I surrendered my will. I ceased fighting alcohol.

For me, that was my new GOD (Gift Of Desperation).

I had painted myself into such a tight corner there was no other choice but to walk across the wet paint and get the heck out of the room
