Antabuse not working?
Hi - I'm new here, so I hope I'm doing this right. Today I started taking Antabuse (started at 250 mg), and as an experiment drank a small glass of wine. Nothing. Had a little more wine. Still nothing. Took another Antabuse (it's safe, I checked). Still nothing. It's been forty-five minutes since the last Antabuse and I feel fine. I even did a pill search to make sure the pharmacy didn't make a mistake. Has anyone else had this happen? For the first time in my life I'm disappointed that I'm not wretchedly ill.

I drank on Antabuse too, it made my head feel like it was going to explode but it didn't make me throw up, and after a couple drinks it had no more effect. I think the effect depends on how long you've been taking it regularly, it takes a while to build up in your system. I probably hadn't been taking it long enough, and if you just started today then it's not surprising that you didn't feel any effect. Take it as directed for a week, and the results will probably be quite different if you drink at that point.
There are other options, keep the lines of communication open with your doctor.
I had the opportunity to talk to an Army NP yesterday about the meds I take for opioid dependance/alcoholism. I just needed a stop gap on my meds until I could get in to my regular doctor and I'm a Veteran so I asked nicely. He was honestly interested on how they worked (for me) and how I'm doing. He also updated all my files to reflect that I should never be prescribed an opioid from their facilities again. Two fold!
You don't ever have to drink again, and you aren't alone.

Hi and welcome Hetty
Any medicine takes time to work. This leaflet recommends you wait 24 hours after drinking before you start taking it.
Antabuse Effervescent tablet - Consumer Medicines Information - myDr.com.au
you should have a leaflet of your own somewhere in the packaging
Testing it like you have is kinda counter productive and might be dangerous.. You're taking it to *stop* drinking right?

Glad you are here, Hetty.
I took antabuse for ~15 - 16 months, but I didn't try drinking while I took it.
I don't want to drink anymore.
I did it for many years and the results were all extremely negative.
It was a garbage lifestyle, and I don't miss it.

Hi There,
It takes a while to get built up in your system. Keep talking it. About day 3 was when drinking became very unpleasant for me. Keep in mind, once it is in your system, you can stop taking it and it is still there, for a while. So you can't stop taking it one day and drink the next. Kind of nice since that means to start drinking again it won't be a spur of the moment decision. You will have to really want it and keep wanting it for several days, before you can get it. If at any point during that several days you come to your senses and realize you would rather be sober, just take one and you have bought yourself a few more days sober. I like it. It works well for me.
