Finally got the message... Struggling with withdrawal

After a second DUI arrest, plenty of other run ins with the law, blacking out in unsafe places, having my face smashed while I was walking home, getting hit by a car, and ruining countless relationships and drunk texting and calling even countless more, I finally learned my lesson because for the first time, I missed work. I am trying to figure out how to fix that issue, but that one thing after all these years was the one seemingly most minor consequence that finally made me decide I was done for real.

It's now been about 51 hours, and I couldn't sleep last night even with unison and valerian. I'm definetly having some mild to moderate withdrawals. I have a doctors appt at 4pm, but I'm afraid of what could happen next.

Am I safe from getting seizures? Am I safe from DTs at this point?

The liquor stores are just opening and I was thinking about buying some whiskey just in case to keep me fine til I can get medication tonight/tomorrow. I'm just afraid I'll accidently get drunk.

Other than the headache, insomnia, extreme fatigue and twitches and muscle cramps I surprisingly feel really good. It sure beats the daily hangover. I'm just afraid it could get worse possibly life threatening.

Help?

Welcome to SR, plea.

I am glad to hear that you are seeing your doctor this afternoon; be very honest and straightforward with him/her.

Do you have anyone with you to watch you between now and your appointment?

Would it be fair to say I'm over the hump of it by now?

If for whatever reason, something doesn't feel right...head right to ER wherever you are. Don't hesitate or "wait it through" - get right to the emerg.
My last bender I had a GF sit with me before I was able to get to my Dr's.
Better safe than sorry.

I hope you feel better soon and keep posting.
Make sure you are totally honest with your Dr.
Don't be ashamed or embarrassed, they see this all the time. The only one you will hurt is yourself if you don't throw all your cards on the table.

Hi plea618, the way I see it you've taken 3 steps on the right direction, seeing a doctor, posting on this site, and haven't drank in a couple days. Your physical symptoms may get better although they may get worse. One thing is certain, if you drink again, they will certainly get worse. Good job on your initial steps. I wish you the best. Believe in yourself, as you are the only one that matters right now.

You will never have to go through these 50 some hours again. Getting sober sucks, but staying sober is way easier. If you get serious tremors the hospital will detox you in the emergency room. We all had to get through this, you are not alone.

So I gave in I had two shots. It was actually awful. I think I'm psychologically adverse to drinking, but the feeling of dread is subsiding I'm not having anymore til I see the doc for something. IJust can't afford an ER bill.

Plea618,
Be careful with the whiskey...you don't need another DUI on the way to the Dr. Tell your Dr. everything, they have heard it all before. Hopefully, your Dr. will prescribe some withdrawal meds and you can detox safely at home. It only takes a couple days to get right...then you can concentrate on your recovery. Best wishes & get rid of the booze before you go to see the Dr.

Back in the day, A.A. used to Give detoxing people a bit of booze to keep from dying. So I guess you aren't doing so bad, as long as you won't continue. Get to the Doctors ASAP.

Well, I hope that's all you drink and you follow through with the doctor. Be honest about your drinking problem. Also, if your doctor prescribes Ativan or other benzos, DO NOT DRINK while taking those drugs! I did, and it made me do completely irrational things while believing they were acceptable.

Withdrawal can be tricky and dangerous, but we can't give medical advice. Going to the DR is the best bet and if you honestly think you need a drink before then, just have one. Withdrawal is something to mess with.
