Prayer

I've been told to pray, even if it feels odd. Yesterday it felt a bit weird. Today, I asked God for a sober day and said the serenity prayer and the Step 3 prayer when I woke up (as advised by my sponsor).

Since stopping drinking my eating regime has gone out the window and I was/am scared I would slip down that slope as a replacement. I was eating lots of crisps and chocolate and felt powerless, out of control. So, I prayed. I prayed for the strength to stop, the strength to focus on my programme and stop changing how I feel in a different way... 10 minutes later I was tipping them into a bin bag and spraying them with hairspray so I could not eat them.

I'm astounded, because I have no idea where it came from, and I'd had no belief I could do that.

I'm also now finding myself angry at myself for what I've done these past few weeks. The drinking, the eating, ruining things. So, again, I've just prayed for the strength to turn the anger into determination. We'll see how that goes!

AWESOME sarahlou in learning how to
strengthen the spirituality part of your
recovery program.

I memorized all my prayers so that they
can go with me wherever I go and can
be said whenever I need them. Like saying
them when we need that extra courage to
do something or get thru something. We
maybe in the grocery store passing an isle
of poison and suddenly that aggravating
voice inside, the devil inside trying to make
you believe that its okay to drink the poison
and kill ourselves.

Be Gone Devil, You are not wanted here as
I repeat the Serenity Prayer over and over
again until peace and serenity calms me down
and can carry on my shopping and get the
heck out of the store.

Today some 24yrs sober later, I lay my head
down to sleep and say all my prayers in my
mind to calm me down and keep whats important
to me in my own recovery strong and present
in my mind, body and soul.

Keep up the good progress in your recovery
Sarahlou...!!!

I've never been much of a pray-er, myself, and the serenity prayer is lovely but it always felt a little forced to me. But I heard something in a meeting that has stuck with me. It's that there are only two prayers we really need:

In the morning, "Please".
At the end of the day, "Thank you".

Good luck!

I believe in the power of prayer, Sarahlou. Prayer (more like conversations with God) was pretty much the only 'support' I had in the beginning of my sobriety efforts. In the process, I found a deepening relationship with God (another benefit of sobriety and recovery).

Glad that you have discovered another tool for your toolbox.
