NyQuil

I got the flu right now...it sucks! I have NyQuil up in the cabinet but I'm hesitant about taking it. I believe its between 10 to 20% alcohol but it works. Do you think using it could lead to relapse?

Is there someone who can run out and pick up an alcohol-free cold remedy?

I, personally, wouldn't risk it.

Honestly? That 1/20th of a shot shouldn't affect you.

I have no problem using Nyquil. It helps me rest and it has never caused me to crave alcohol.

Personally I wouldn't do it - I'm not the 'one shot' type of guy and I suspect neither are you.

Best thing would be to see a Dr - failing that, go get the non alc version, or send someone out for it

I have no problem with it--others would never touch it. It depends on your conscience and brutal honesty with yourself about your motivations. I have never looked to it to have that particular warm feeling--I never cared about it. To me it's a cough medicine that puts me to sleep.

Other people know that if they took it, they would be deliberately ingesting alcohol, and it would be violating their sobriety.

You have to be very clear about where you stand. if in doubt, don't use it.

Next time someone goes to the store have them pick up some Robitussin DM. No alcohol and it works really well. Besides, I never understood why a company would make something that mixes Alcohol and Acetaminophen which are known to interact poorly with each other. If it's all you've got, I wouldn't worry too much about one dose of it. After all, it is the mental impulses that really kill us not a small amount of alcohol. Just don't sip it like a cordial

I used to abuse it in my drinking days. In six years I've been sick enough one time to take it. That was just a few months ago. Otherwise, I avoid anything with alcohol in it.

There's nothing wrong with taking medications like that but only as prescribed. If you truly feel strong enough to take it, then do. If you're not sure, even a little bit, then don't.

It's just one of those personal decisions we often have to make in our sober journey. Hope you feel better soon.

Hope you feel better, Stang. The flu is a monster; the CDC recently advised that this year's vaccine only offers protection to half of the flu viruses circulating this year.

sounds like a bad idea, especially since you're worried about it. just be safe and get something without the alcohol in it.

Answering the question 'does it lead to relapse' can only be answered in hindsight. Lots of folks relapse without it and many take it without drinking again. If you have quit drinking for good, no matter what, there is no issue. If you haven't quit drinking for good, it might be useful to think about what that means for you.

Flu is simply the worst I have ever felt. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I wouldn't risk it. The flu, as awful as it is, is nothing compared to a relapse. There are other choices. Go with those.

If it was something I was worried about, I just wouldn't do it. I won't have to stress about it if I just don't do it. Problem, and qualms, solved.
