Here's a very good talk on "emotional sobriety" that you might find useful. It's a long talk but hang in there. The "when do I get happy?" question is something that plagues a lot of us I think. I hope this helps you as much as it did me:

Thanks- it is helpful
Dollpart you don't have to go to aa if you don't want to. In my opinion your putting in way too much thinking on this. If you're tired of booze just quit. No girlfriend or social setting or family member or anyone can influence you to drink or not to drink. Aa is a great fellowship. Go to meetings because you want to. If you don't like going there, then stop going. Just don't drink. Things will improve if you stop drinking. If you don't and your an alcoholic then you will destroy your life. Find your method of giving up drinking. I wish you well!

The 12th step sez carry the message to other alcoholics and practice the principals in all your affairs--nothing about going to meetings. It's a big world. Try to help somebody in whatever arena or capacity you can and you are doing 12th step work (selfless acts of giving is the way to contentment in all spiritual paths). Your struggle, perseverance and hope is something to share...here for example. I don't use AA much anymore but not so much because it's wrong but I've found other tools. Best wishes on finding what works for you!
